Bright ENGLISH – Overview of the Exam
Introduction to BRIGHT English
BRIGHT English is a language-based test, offered by a Massachusetts-based company in the US named Bright Languages and certified by the University of Michigan, often recommended by companies in over 80 countries for the assessment and evaluation of their employees. Being used as a base for recruitment of job-seekers from across the globe, BRIGHT English is a part of other BRIGHT language tests which include BRIGHT French, BRIGHT German, BRIGHT Portuguese and few other European languages. Testing the competencies in language aptitude, ie., linguistics of the workers at the workplace is the main criteria for taking up the test by the employees to better their communication skills either with colleagues or with other multinational companies around the world. This test is not only helpful for the employees to boost their CVs but also helps them gain their proficiency and strengthen their position in their respective companies alongside climbing the ladders of hierarchy based on their language skills.
A similar type of computerized language test, offered by the Cambridge University, by the name of BULATS keeps a track of the different language proficiencies of candidates wishing to work in countries with the above-mentioned languages or any other multinational companies worldwide. The scores of this exam are accepted and recognised in several companies, especially in France where it is an add-on for the HR department and the recruiters.

Exam Pattern of BRIGHT English
The BRIGHT English involves the evaluation of two significant language skills- listening and writing. Hence this test includes two sections:
- Written comprehension (Grammar)
- Oral comprehension
Each module comprises 60 questions with a total of 120 questions. The scores are immediately announced once the test is completed. With an interface ranging up to 14 languages in number, hence it becomes easier for the candidates to access their results in their respective languages. The time duration for the exam is between 45 minutes to 1 hour depending on the speed of the candidate. Scoring for this test is done between 0(beginners) and 5(advanced) which is in accordance to the number of levels compressed during the preparation of this test which will be discussed below.
Proficiency Levels for BRIGHT English
In accord with to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), the proficiency in the BRIGHT English test as well as other languages is divided into three levels:-
- A1-A2- Beginners/Elementary
- B1-B2 -Intermediate
- C1-C2 – Advanced
Each of these levels is definitive of the competency of the individual based on his language and communication skills. Since certification is open for the beginners, students belonging to A1 level can also answer the exam without hesitation. Grading of the tests is done based on points like vocabulary, grasp over language and its structure as well as grammar hence students need to work on these points according to score an average of +0.5 in each section.
The registration process for BRIGHT English
Although BRIGHT English is very much prevalent in several countries as a language-based test, it is marginally as popular as TOEIC, IELTS and TOEFL. Registration can be done in any of the nearby BRIGHT English test centres all across the globe as well as in centres offering language courses as seen in the cases of TOEIC, IELTS and TOEFL, prior to the exam date by 2-3 months in advance. Few famous centres include The Bright School of English accredited by the British Council, Serviar Formation, etc.
Price for BRIGHT English
The price ranges from £80 to £120, based on the test centre in which the booking for the test has been done. Session costs are on the expensive side as stated by the Student Price List 2019 of the Bright School of English. This is just an example to show how price varies country-wise. Pricing is very much similar in case of another other English language-based test like TOEIC, TOEFL etc, with the difference in cost being meagre.
Preparation for BRIGHT English
Preparation of the syllabus should be done with the precision of structure hence solving TOEIC practice sheets is the best option. As stated by several centres, a minimum of 13 to 15 hours worth practice is necessary to pass the exam alongside focusing on vocabulary and grammar being the testing aspects of the English Language. Following a schedule with the timely devotion of about 30 minutes to 1 hour on a regular basis on solving a stipulated number of questions every day is mandatory for a good score as well as to keep a track of time required in completing each section. These mock tests contain questions varying in difficulty level which provides support to the candidate and making them prepared in advance for the worst. In my opinion, the best websites for registering oneself for the sessions include which even provide the prices for each course to be taken up by the students. Hence if the right form of preparation is done, cracking the BRIGHT English test would not be tough. For further references, please keep a lookout for our articles.
