IELTS

The IELTS exam consists of two tests that are intended for two distinct purposes. IELTS Academic for higher education institutions and IELTS General Training for the professional world. In both cases, it assesses the language skills necessary for the overall mastery of a language. Each section of the IELTS exam has its own guidelines. The sections are as follows:

Oral comprehension consists of answering 40 questions in the form of multiple choice questions.

Written comprehension also consists of answering 40 questions on 3 different texts, all in the form of multiple choice questions.

The written expression consists of two essays, one of 150 words and one of 250 words.

Oral expression takes the form of a face-to-face interview with an IELTS examiner. This one consists of 3 parts. First, the examiner asks the candidate general questions. Then, this one discusses a subject drawn. Finally, a broader dialogue that arises from the subject commits between the examiner and the candidate.

The notation goes from 0 or 1 (beginner) to 9 (expert). The average is made with the score obtained in all the tests which are also scored from 0 to 9. This average makes it possible to have its overall score in the English assessment. Each section of the exam is also scored from 0 to 9.

As with all language assessments, it depends entirely on your goal. If you are a student and pass an English certification, it is better to get a grade above 6. Indeed it is usually the minimum score required by schools and institutions of higher education abroad.
